I’m Collecting: Persephone Books

I’m Collecting: Persephone Books

About 5 years ago, my cool sister, Maggie, bought me my first two Persephone books. For every birthday or Christmas, she's added to the collection. I’ve now amassed about 20 or so of these beautiful publications and they are some of my most prized possessions.

Lemme tell you a little about them... Persephone Books is a small publishing house/shop in London’s Bloomsbury area. They choose works by (somewhat unknown) mid-twentieth century women writers, print them, and present them in a simple grey jacket with patterned lining and a bookmark designed from popular fabric of the day.  Here’s an example:

This is their beautiful shop, which I got to visit last summer!

They make the best gifts!  Persephone makes it really easy to start a collection.  You can join a Book of the Month Club or select certain interests (like "dog-lover" or "man who doesn't read novels") and let them help you choose the best books.  I’m hoping to start my niece, Maisie, on a collection when she gets just old enough to really resent it!  Thinking middle school.

If you want to see if you're into it before you commit, I recommend The Priory by Dorothy Whipple.

Visit their website for more info and rave reviews.
