Four Funny Memoirs by Female Authors
Hey, hey! Happy Monday!
By far my fave thing to read is a good memoir. I’ve posted about a few here on SCM (The Year of Magical Thinking is my GOAT). There are too many out there to love, and since the worries of the world are making me sick, I think some humor is the cure.
Here are 4 funny memoirs that’ll have us splitting our sides, mom.
1. Bossypants by Tina Fey- You’ve probably read this one already, but maybe it’s time for round 2? Round 1 was maybe the quickest read of my life. And just saw her on David Letterman’s My Next Guest... and was reminded of her groundbreaking, female-centric, SNL sketches and want to give this one another go. It’s just so darn fun.
2. We Are Never Meeting in Real Life by Samantha Irby- Irby is pee-your-pants funny. Her life story is real tragic, but she manages to find the humor in both her childhood and her more current day-to-day as a receptionist at a vet’s office. Oh and wow! She’s from my hometown, Evanston, along with the Cusack’s and Donald Rumsfeld. Can’t wait for her collab with Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) that’s turning her book of essays, Meaty, into a TV Show.
3. Waiting for Birdy by Catherine Newman- My friend Molly recommended this when I was about to have my 2nd child. I laughed my way through her accounts of the chaos and absurdity of parenting a toddler. Newman’s written a few books on the topic of raising kids (Catastrophic Happiness) and also writes the advice column in Real Simple magazine.
4. Heartburn by Nora Ephron- OK. I’ve never read this one but I Feel Bad About My Neck was killer and this one’s THE classic Ephron, says everyone (but particularly my sister Maggie). You know Ephron from her movie-writing fame (Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, etc., etc.). It’s next on my list.
What are you faves in this genre? I’d love to know!
