4 Fave Books about Motherhood and Making Art

Happy Moms Week

—-

Dang!  It’s hard to think big when you’ve got butts to wipe but somehow, some MAJOR moms manage to make stuff!!!  How do they do it?  I’m doing detective work 24/7 and getting a clue from some awesome artist-moms who’ve shared their stories via the written word.  I mean... books!  You heard of ‘em?

Here are the best reads for being creative while raising kids...

My all time fave...

 1. Dept of Speculation by Jenny Offill- This book has an unusual structure, chapters that act like little poetic snippets of a marriage, of parenting, and of trying to be an artist in the midst of it all.  Thanks for the rec, Sarah Hollenbeck!

One that annoyed me a little but I can’t stop thinking about...

2.  Motherhood by Sheila Heti- This one’s written almost like a diary.  Each “entry” records Heti’s evolving (but often stagnant) internal dialogue around the choice to become a mother, or, to paraphrase her, to “birth”* something else.. art!

One that I’ve read twice (and despite being nerdy, I never read stuff twice)...

3.  Hold Still, A Memoir with Photographs by Sally Mann-  This one’s less about motherhood and more about being an artist.  Sally Mann, most famous for her Immediate Family series, shares the motivations behind her work- chiefly, her family, her dogs, and her lifelong connection to the Southern landscape.

And real funny and relatable one I just finished...

4.  And Now We Have Everything, On Motherhood Before I Was Ready by Meaghan O’Connell- Lotsa real talk in this one... O’Connell eagerly shares insecurities about her relationships, her body, her capabilities as a new mother, and her writing career.  I guzzled it lickety-split.  You will too!

Word to ya moms.

Tell me... which books am I missing?

*Heti repeats this analogy quite often in the book, it’s not my genius idea
