Cool Mom Music: “My Mother and I,” A song that speaks to this cynical kid
In honor of Mother’s Day, singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus wrote and released “My Mother and I.”
“Being adopted has encouraged me to consider what mothers pass on through blood and body, and what they impact in the way of socialization and context... We—daughters, and all children—easily inherit the shame and fear of our mothers, but also the pride, self-assurance, and lessons of love.” -Lucy Dacus to PAste
Dacus and her adoptive mother share May birthdays (me too!) and, through her lyrics, she uses this notion to connect herself, spiritually, to the woman who raised her .
Now, I’m not big on astrology, or other supernatural stuff (to MY mother’s dismay) but I love this idea that mom and daughter were born under the same sky— like, the stars matched up for their births, though they were miles and years apart.
Take a listen and “stop being such a skeptic”*:
Mom, you may still make a believer outta me!
