Help! What "Good Music" Do My Kids Need to Hear?
Praise be! We just bought (leased, really) a new car! It's honestly the nicest thing I've ever owned and I can't believe all the cool features it has... not one, but TWO sunroofs, a camera that helps me when I'm backing up, rear temperature control, working AC, and a stereo that plays stuff other than AM/FM radio! Ok it's more than just a stereo. It connects to my phone via "Apple Play" and I can use my voice to call people, text, get directions, check the weather, start a podcast, etc. It's nuts! Get this! I can also connect to Spotify and play "good music" LOUDLY instead of using my cupholder as a makeshift speaker! As awesome as that is, it's made me aware of my dismal digital music collection. When I get in the car and the internet gives me one million choices, I'm stumped! And now I have this tiny captive audience (my kids)! Will it be... Raffi? "Disney Music Sing-Along" Playlist? Cardi B? Alright, Raffi. For the zillionth time.
My dad is a musician and music history NERD! Growing up, he really made an effort to expose us to all the "good music." I remember protesting so hard when he forced us to listen to the Tom Tom Club on a road trip out West and then feeling super cool when I knew the sample on Mariah Carey's "Fantasy." That said, I don't claim to have anything but a basic appreciation for pop music and, in terms of music history, I don't remember too much, but I'm so thankful that "good music" was such a big part of my childhood. I want that for my kids!
And they're getting older. And I've got this stereo. And lots of car rides in our future.
So... What should I play for them?
(Mom, I'd love ALBUM recommendations (as opposed to playlists), so they can get the real gist of somebody, you know?)
I'll compile a list and share!!! Thanks in advance for all the great recs!!
