Ghoulish, Coolish Mom Art: Valerie Hegarty
Well, it’s the 1st of October.
I thought I’d into the spirit of the season by sharing some of my fave spooky art. Throughout the month, I’ll feature artists who make work that is scary, unsettling, or just plain strange.
First up, Valerie Hegarty.
Hegarty’s been on the scene since way back. She’s painter, ceramicist, and mixed-media artist who plays around with materials to achieve a trompe l’oeil (eye-tricking) effect. She likes to disrupt traditional painting subjects by making it look like they’re melting, morphing, decaying, or disappearing.
Like, check out these simple but spooktacular watercolor still lives.
Or this portrait! It’s alive!!!!!!!
She uses lotsa spines in unexpected places.
Like inside this frame.
Or these carrots.
And teeth on these watermelon. Egads!
And have you even seen anything more frightening than this fruit face? Jeepers!!
Wanna more more about the motivations behind the work (which are actually quite political)? Watch this video on her recent show “American Berserk” at Burning in Water Gallery in NYC.
p.s. I will be using that pun all month long, so get used to it, get into it, like it, laugh at it... OR ELSE!!!!
