Weekly Culture Report: Sheboygan and Beyond

Weekly Culture Report: Sheboygan and Beyond

Hey mom!  Hope you had a great, short week.  Last weekend, we were up in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, braving the subzero temps just long enough to drive 10 minutes to Sheboygan to scarf a brat and check out the Kohler Arts Center, which is maybe my new favorite museum.  I only got to see the new exhibition, which is a celebration of some incredible “outsider artists.”  I’m itching to go back and see the rest.

This exhibit the placed sculptures by  Dr. Charles Smith  in an environment designed by artist Heather Hart.  It’s all very intentional and brilliant.

They also have a sunny and vibrant Artery for kids, where they can experiment with materials in the styles or techniques of artists on view at the museum.  Right now, the walls are filled with bold murals by Chicago sign-painter Shelby Rodeffer.

Here are some great links from around the globe:

Just came across this great stuff by painter Kasper Bosmans.  It’s like new-age heraldry.  Check out more here or see it IRL at the Gladstone Gallery in NYC until Feb. 24.

These paintings look like bizarro family crests.      Why we loved Dolores O’Riordan and, speaking of blasts from the past, the Cocteau Twins are reissuing some old stuff (?!).  I remember loving this dreamy one .

Wanna be on trend, mom? Nylon says go with pastels, menswear, or both!

Prolific writer and activist (and photographer? And folk singer?) Julius Lester passed away yesterday.  I loved reading his books as a kid (he won the Newbery Medal for To Be A Slave) and use this one in my classroom a lot.

Lester wrote 44 children’s books.  This one is great for important conversations.

Since the Women’s March is tomorrow (or Sunday depending on where you live) and politics is everything I can think about...

A perfect reaction to more racism by Roxanne Gay.

and some great music from a “shithole country” to start your weekend off right (courtesy of Bitch Media).  Pretty sure they forgot about this one!!

I bet you can’t resist a little rump shake!  Give in, mom!!

And have a fun weeekend!
