Weekly Culture Report; Long Weekend, Quick Links

Hey there!

TGIF, mom!  I’m excited for this long weekend.  We are taking the boys to Wisconsin, where we’d hoped to do some cross-country skiing, but, hell! No snow in these MIdwestern parts!!  Instead, we plan on hitting up the resort’s indoor pool and our favorite supper club for brandy old-fashioneds and deep-fried everything.

Before we shove off, here are a few links to great stuff happening in culture right now!

There’s another book out from much lauded Jesmyn Ward, author of Salvage the Bones and Sing, Unburied, SIng, which topped loads of “best of 2017” lists, including mine.  You can get it Jan 16th.

This new one is fun!  Haven’t heard from David Byrne in a while.  His new album, American Utopia, drops in March.

Chicago painter Paul Heyer has a show at the MCA starting Jan. 16th.  His work is pure loveliness.  See more here.

And this film debuted at the Gene Siskel Film Center last night.  It’s all about maintaining native language, culture, and tradition on Kodiak Island, Alaska.   Looks just wonderful.

Enjoy yourself this long weekend!  Need a Sconnie-style drink to start it off right?  Here’s a good recipe.

Stay cool.
