Women Rule: Marisol @ the MCA

Women Rule: Marisol @ the MCA

I was at the Museum of Contemporary Art with the boys last weekend, to see the Murakami exhibit before it closes.  Teddy slept through it and James whined about wanting Goldfish the whole time.  I got to see about 2% of the show, which was still so good.

I didn't have time to see the first floor, except for a quick glimpse of something great!!!  Now, I'm dying to go back and have some QT with this QT: Marisol.

The museum just opened a new restaurant, MARISOL, in her honor and, guess who's behind it?  Lula Cafe chef Jason Hammel.  Good call, right?

Marisol is named for Venezuelan-American artist Marisol (1930–2016), a star of the New York art scene and friend of Andy Warhol. Marisol’s iconoclasm and glamour, combined with her international outlook, make her a fitting inspiration for the MCA’s new restaurant.
Marisol’s gift of the sculpture Six Women in 1968 started the MCA’s collection. As a nod to our namesake, some of the items featured on the menu are inspired by the artist’s favorite dishes.

Here's Six Sisters, the work that inspired the restaurant.  It's currently in the We Are Here show.

So, I really, really love this artist.  I planned a sculpture unit last year based on her art!  Check out this cute sketch by one of my students.

Look at these amazingly weird sculptures!  Be on the lookout for some self-portraits!

Wanna see more?  Check out Six Sisters (and Self-portrait) in person at the MCA before you eat at her namesake restaurant!!!

Or, buy this book!

Or read this Gaurdian piece, written shortly after her death, about her quiet power.
