Weekly Culture Recap: Take Comfort in Culture

Weekly Culture Recap: Take Comfort in Culture

Geez, it's been a tough week for lots of moms out there!  Hurricanes, hydrogen bombs, and the end of the DACA program.

But take comfort, great things are happening...

IN MUSIC & ART!: I'm loving the visuals in St. Vincent's "New York."  The colors, the compositions, everything!  Perfection.

It was directed by artist Alex Da Corte, who had a recent show at MassMOCA.  He's got a real consistent aesthetic, featuring a love of neon, pink + green, and the occasional swan.

And everybody's talking about the Fenty X Puma show (Rihanna's label).

Rihanna’s Instagram handle is called badgalriri for a reason. The pop star has an insatiable appetite for danger and her risk-taking swagger permeates everything she does, not least her sense of style. Tonight she gave fashion-conscious adrenaline junkies a night to remember, opening her Fenty X Puma show at the ‪Park Avenue Armory with a trio of dare-devil moto-cross stuntmen who turned dazzling 360-degree tricks over the mountains of pink sand on the runway below.

Whoa.  Sounds like my nightmare.  I tend to steer clear of anything death-defying.  No thanks, I choose life!!  It's just that the clothes are real good.  See pics of the collection here.

IN MEDIA!:  Fascinating piece about the "evolution of women in stock photos" from the NYTimes.

In 2007, the top-selling image for the search term “woman” in Getty Image’s library of stock photography was a naked woman lying on a bed, gazing at the camera with a towel draped over her bottom half.

In 2017, it’s a woman hiking a rocky trail in Banff National Park, alone on the edge of a cliff high above a turquoise lake. She’s wearing a down jacket and wool hat, and her face isn’t visible.

At Getty, global searches for “woman protest” quadrupled in the last year. Searches for “woman coding” tripled, and those for “female C.E.O.” grew 47 percent.

Well, that's hopeful.

AND IN LITERATURE!:  Speaking of boss ladies, thanks for the encouragement on this literature post about female biographies.  Got a great recommendation to check out Bravery Magazine, "a quarterly print publication for kids featuring strong female role models. Full of artwork, stories and fun educational activities."

The first issue, with a heroic Jane Goodall on the cover!!

I was cheering on a friend at the Ironman, Wisconsin yesterday and got teary just about every time a woman passed by.  I know, I know, women being strong and stuff isn't new, but I had just read this book (all about the first female marathon runner, Bobbi Gibb) and kept thinking about how far we've come!

Oh, yeah.  Long-distance exercise is also my nightmare, along with this:  while we were away, the inevitable happened:  we lost "Lambie"  (my son's beloved mini-blanket).  We are currently in the 2nd stage of grief: anger.  He hates Wisconsin so much right now.

Wish us well this week as we comb through city toy stores for Lambie's long-lost "cousin."
